The National Debt: I.O.U.S.A
Nov 07Recently a friend of mine shared this 30 minute video from the new documentary out called I.O.U.S.A. I currently can’t speak to the quality of the whole feature film but I can say that the 30 minute excerpt that I viewed was not only interesting but a clearly crafted wake up call to America. This film really keeps the partisan posturing on the sidelines and discusses what I feel is the most important issue facing our country today, the National Debt. The bottom line is we can’t keep spending the way we do both on a personal or a national level. The age of indiscriminate credit is over and if we don’t wake up and smell the coffee, we will find the nation that we love in shambles. So we not only have a responsibility to curtail our own bad habits but also to inform the folks that represent us on the local, state, and national level that the irresponsible spending has got to stop. I also took the time this evening to write my representatives, Boxer and Feinstein regarding my concern and to not only ask for their help but offer help in any way possible. As a collective, we have just come off of a landmark election, an election where both young and old came out in droves to have their voices heard. The challenge now is to make sure that everyone doesn’t go home and leave the heavy lifting to someone else. Although we may have become pampered as of late, Americans are known for their grit and gusto but it’s all a matter of what’s really important. Do we rest on our laurels or rediscover the determination and work ethic that made this country great. Also, I am totally open to comments and emails regarding this topic as to how to be a part of the solution. I’ll be posting follow ups to this after I see the full-length film and I am also interested to see what avenues there are out there for an average girl like to me to help solve what I see as one big whopper of an issue.
